The Supreme Court of the Republic of Cyprus decided on 1 February 2011 that Arts. 4 and 5 of the Law on the Retention of Telecommunications Data for the Investigation into Criminal Offences (L.183(I)2007) are in breach of the Constitution; moreover, the Law appears to go beyond the scope and goals of Directive 2006/24/EC on data retention. The Court verdict was issued in relation to petitions for a writ of certiorari by four persons against District Court orders that granted the police access to the claimants telephone communications data. Cyprus amended its Law on Radio and Television Stations (L. 7(I)/1998) and the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation Law (Ch. 300A) and harmonised the Republic's legislation with the European Directive 2010/13/EU on Audiovisual Media Services - codified version. The creation of a website on digital television and of a 'digital television theatre' are two of the main actions for informing the public about the benefits of digital television and the digital switch-over.
