IRIS 1996-4:1/7 EU Council/European Parliament: Directive on the legal protection of databases adopted - Part 3: Epilogue?

In IRIS 1996-2: 13 we reported on the adoption of the Directive on the legal protection of databases. We indicated that the Directive would be adopted on 15 or 22 February. At the International UNESCO Symposium on Copyright and Communication in the Information Society, held in Madrid from 11-14 March 1996, the Commission announced that the Directive was in the end adopted on 26 February 1996. We reported this in IRIS 1996-3: 6. Then after the publication of IRIS 1996-3 we learned that the official date of the adoption of the Directive is 11 March 1996.

In IRIS 1996-2: 13 we reported on the adoption of the Directive on the legal protection of databases. We indicated that the Directive would be adopted on 15 or 22 February. However, the Directive was finally adopted on 26 February 1996. So far, the Directive has not been published. The text of the Directive will be available from the Observatory after its official publication.

On 15 or 22 February 1996 the European Directive on the legal protection of databases has finally been adopted by the EU Council and the European Parliament. The Directive will protect authors and producers of databases and other collections of information against various acts of misappropriation.
