IRIS 2004-5:1/23 [SI] Changes to Media Act Adopted

On 3 March 2004 the Slovenian government approved changes to the media act for first reading in the Parliament. It aims at the creation of conditions for media pluralism and the harmonisation of the sector with the acquis communautaire. The changes to the act were also necessary due to a new telecommunications bill. A number of Member States of the Council of Europe have either signed or ratified treaties of relevance to the audiovisual sector since the publication in IRIS 2002-5 of the table of signatures and ratifications of such treaties. - On 14 May, the Netherlands became the eighth country to accede to the European Convention on the Legal Protection of Services based on, or consisting of, Conditional Access (see IRIS 2000-9: 3). IRIS 2001-8:1/27 [SI] Telecommunication and Broadcasting Regulators Merged

In order to give effect to the new Telecommunications Act (see IRIS 2001-5: 16) and in particular Article 156 of the Act, the Government of the Republic of Slovenia established the Agencija za telekomunikacije in radiodifuzijo RS, the Telecommunications and Broadcasting Agency of the Republic of Slovenia by a decree that came into force on 21 July 2001. On 10 April 2001, the Drzavni zbor (Parliament) passed the new Zakon o telekomunikacijah (Law on Telecommunications). The Act aims to liberalize the telecommunications market by privatising the national leading and state-owned telecommunications operator, the Telekom.
