The South Eastern Europe Cinema Network (SEE) was set up in 2000 on the initiative of the Greek Film Centre (a state-owned organisation attached to the Greek Ministry of Culture).

It promotes and supports the national film industry of eleven Southeast European states (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Greece, Croatia, “the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia”, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovenia, Turkey, Cyprus). The aim is to provide support for the development, production and advertising of the member states’ films both within and outside the network. A support fund for co-productions is also to be set up. The financial contributions come from the participating states. During the pilot phase of the network (1 January 2003 to 31 December 2004), the Greek Film Centre in Athens contributed up to 75% of the budget.

The legal basis is sections 16 to 26 of Law No. 1597/86 of 21 May 1986 on the protection and development of the cinematographic art, the support of the Greek cinema as well as other provisions.
