Part of the Public Health Alcohol Act (PHAA – the Act) came into force on 10 January 2025, seven years after it was signed into law on 17 October 2018. In particular, section 19 of the Act introduces a watershed ban for alcohol advertisement. On 13 November 2024, the Irish national media regulatory authority, Coimisiún na Meán (the Commission), announced that it had determined that TikTok, X and Instagram were "exposed to terrorist content". The decision was reached in accordance with its Decision Framework on Hosting Service Provider Exposure to Terrorist Content published in June 2024. The Irish regulator, Coimisiún na Meán (the Commission), adopted the final Online Safety Code (the Code) on 10 October and published it on 21 October, completing the Commission's overall online safety framework.
