On 21 June 2006, the EFTA Surveillance Authority delivered a reasoned opinion to Liechtenstein for failing to implement Directive 2001/29/EC on the harmonisation of certain aspects of copyright and related rights in the information society. The Directive was to be implemented in national law by 1 August 2005.

On 19 December 2006, Liechtenstein notified the Authority of the implementation of these rules through amendments to the Gesetz über das Urheberrecht und verwandte Schutzrechte (Act on protection of copyright and related rights) of 19 May 1999 and of the Verordnung über das Urheberrecht und verwandte Schutzrechte (Ordinance on copyright) of 14 December 1999.
