On 15 May 1990 a Co-Production Agreement was signed between Italy and Switzerland. It entered into force on 23 December 1993.

The Agreement applies to full length and short films, made by Italian and Swiss producers jointly. Screen writers, technicians, and actors must be Swiss or Italian nationals or must have been resident in the respective countries for at least the last 3 years.

Producers from third countries can join the co-production, if their country is linked to Italy or Switzerland by a films co-production agreement. The majoritarian producer is entitled to co-operate with a producer from a third country even if there is no co-production agreement between the minoritarian producer's country and the third country.

Financial contribution of a co-producer shall be at least 30% (as an exception, 20% are the minimum).
