The preparations for the new Electronic Communications Act in the Czech Republic have entered their final phase. At a meeting with representatives of professional associations, the regulatory authority and companies operating telecommunication networks and providing telecommunication services held on 4 August 2003, the Minister of Technology presented the main provisions of the draft legislation and a schedule of the work, which should result in a regulation implementing the European legislation. According to the principal policy documents of the European Union, the new law should be an instrument for business in the sector and should set rules which will play a major role in determining the economy of the whole country and the life of every citizen in a time of turbulent changes in market and technological development. The content and specific processes for the implementation of the e-Europe 2002 Action Plan now apply in the Czech Republic. As EU countries had to transpose all regulations forming the 2002 regulatory framework of electronic communications into their national law by 24 July 2003, the Czech Republic will have to complete the implementation on 1 May 2004, the date the accession will come into force.
