European Parliament: Rapid Approval of Electronic Commerce Directive

On 4 May 2000, the European Parliament approved the Directive on Electronic Commerce exactly as proposed by the Council of the European Union on 28 February 2000 in its Common Position (see IRIS 2000-3: 4). According to the rules of the co-decision procedure (Article 251 of the EC Treaty), the Directive is now formally adopted and has to be transposed into national law by the Member States within 18 months following the Directive's publication in the Official Journal of the European Communities.
