On 1 September 1999, a new Act on Copyright entered into force in Hungary. The act No. LXXVI of 1999 replaces the former Copyright Act enacted in 1969.

The adoption of the new act was preceded by a long preparatory process, which began in 1994. The purpose of the new act is to adapt the copyright law so as to give proper responses to the challenges emerging from the rapid technological development even seen on the long term.

In the course of the elaboration of the new copyright act, one of the main aims was to reach the highest possible degree of harmonisation with the relevant legal instruments of the European Union.
